1.0 Overview

Each November Boy Scouts of America sponsors a "National Good Turn" called Scouting for Food. Each Scouting unit across the country canvasses its local neighborhood for contributions of food to contribute to a local food bank. For many of our neighbors, food collected as part of this important effort will make the difference between hunger and a decent Thanksgiving.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

Scouting for food proceeds on two successive Saturday mornings. On the first morning Scouts work their way from house to house in designated neighborhoods leaving a doorhanger on the front door of each house. The doorhanger advises the resident of the food drive and asks that they leave a bag of non-perishable food on the doorstep for pickup the following Saturday morning. On the second Saturday, we revisit our assigned neighborhoods and collect any food left for us. We then count up the quantities of food collected and deliver it to the Listen Food Pantry.

In both operations, Scouts are driven around their assigned neighborhoods in small teams (2-4 per car). It is important to keep track of where each team went the first week, so we can go back the second week! Each team will keep track of exactly where it went, and submit a report to the activity leader after returning from putting out doorhangers.

The following Saturday, we will use those reports to assigne teams to collect donated food. On return to the community center, each team will tally up its collection and submit a report. The activity leader will use these reports to complile a final tally for reporting to the Council.

Finally, we will transport the collected food to the Listen Center in Lebanon.
