1.0 Overview

Troop 45 will have an "Old Fashioned Campout", where we will try using some techniques and equipment which Scout were using half a century or more ago. What did scouts do before nylon, Gore-Tex or Jetboils? There are three main ways which camp-craft has changed in the past decades: 1) Tents have evolved from tarps 2) Sleeping bags have replaces blankets 3) stoves have replaced cooking on fire. Scouts are encouraged to try some of these techniques. In fact only cooking on fire will be required, but the others are encouraged.

This outing will provide advancement opportunities for tenderfoot, second class, first class, and camping merit badge. It is ideal for meeting the tenderfoot and second class hiking and camping requirements.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will hike 5 miles starting where the AT crosses Goose Pond Road. We will climb the North Peak of Moose Mountain and have a "bag lunch" on top. We then follow the AT to the South Peak and descend to our traditional camp site near Three Mile Road. Here we will create our old fashion camp site. In the morning we will hike out to Three Mile Road and be picked up at the AT parking area.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The hike is 1,000 feet up and down a 2,200 foot peak, so be careful to pack what you can carry. Also we should expect a frost that night and always be ready for precipitation.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all Boy Scouts, Scouters, and parents. There are no skill prerequisites for this outing.

3.3 Costs

$10. This will cover the cost of dinner and breakfast. Bring your own lunch for Saturday.

3.4 Equipment

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Class A uniform for travel.
  • Standard camping gear as described in the Personal Equipment List. Make whatever modifications to your gear you are comfortable with: tarp instead of tent; blanket roll instead of sleeping bag; leave the stove behind; wool instead of fleece. Do keep in mind that late October weather can be cold and wet.
  • Your share of equipment and supplies planned by your patrol.
  • Adequate clothing for the weather!
  • Bring a bag lunch to eat on Saturday.

  • Patrol cook kits.
  • Food for supper and breakfast. We will cook as patrols.
