1.0 Overview

As part of the New Scout Training Program, the troop offers a campout geared specifically to the needs of our newest Scouts. Although a simple campout at Storrs Pond, it will include the elements of more ambitious outings, including a hiking approach and the use of backpacking techniques. There will be numerous opportunities to learn basic outdoor skills, but also activities just for fun.

This campout will help meet requirements 1, 2, and 3 for Tenderfoot, and will introduce new scouts to Troop 45 outing procedures. It also offers opportunities to work on other requirements for Tenderfoot and Second Class.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at Storrs Pond Main Entrance on Saturday morning, and hike the half mile to our campsite at the end of the pond. We will make camp at our site, and engage in training and fun activities for the day. Sunday morning will be a quick pack and go, but with a navigation exercise on the way out.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The hike in to camp is easy on wide trails, but be properly equipped and packed for a hiking approach. There will also be physical activity during the events.

Be prepared for the forecast weather. This is a 100% uniformed event. Class A uniform is required for travel and for flags; class B otherwise.

The campsite is an established site. Fires are permitted but we will be using this outing as an opportunity to learn to use backpacking stoves.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents.

There are no skills prerequisites for this outing.

3.3 Costs

None.

3.4 Food

Although this outing is intended as training for wilderness travel, we will nevertheless be cooking by patrol. Matt is handling menu planning and procurement.

3.5 Equipment

3.5.1 Individual Equipment

  • Class A uniform for travel and flags; Class B otherwise.
  • Overnight gear as described in the Personal Equipment handout.
  • Pocket Knife (in your pack, not your pocket)
  • Bring at least 2 liters of water per person. There is no potable water at the campsite. (But there is water not too far away.)
  • Boy Scout Handbook.
  • Personal cooking gear (cup and spoon), or whatever is needed for the planned menu.

    We will into buddy groups of two or three each. Each buddy group should share a tent and cooking gear as appropriate.
