2.0 ConceptThis outing is an opportunity for scouts with no previous experience to try rock climbing at out local training cliff, Winslow Ledges. Winslow offers a nearly perfect environment for learning basic rock climbing skills. It is easy to get to, has good, solid rock offering a variety of challenges, and is easily protected from above. We will offer basic instruction in rope handling, belaying, and climbing technique, with an emphasis on teamwork and safety. The outing will provide advancement opportunities for Climbing Merit Badge.
2.1 DescriptionWe will meet at the Community Center Parking Lot, and drive to the trailhead. After hiking in to the cliffs, we will conduct a short safety briefing, and then learn basic rope handling, belaying, and climbing techniques. While the beginners are working on these items, the more experienced will be rigging the cliff for climbing. We will then take turns climbing with a break for lunch at noon. After lunch, we will do a little more climbing, perhaps expanding our techniques, and then pack up to return to Hanover.

2.3 Expected Conditions and DifficultyThe hike in to the cliffs is about a mile. It is not difficult, but does demand normal hiking preparations. Be prepared for the weather.
The climbing area is very well suited to instruction of beginners. It has easy access to the top, good anchorage, minimal loose rock, and a nice variety of climbs. Cliff heights range from about thirty feet to about 120 feet.
It is very important for all participants to understand that we are guests at Winslow, and we must be respectful of our hosts. In the past, many climbers using Winslow have not shown the appropriate respect, and the landowners have sometimes closed the area. During our visit we will set an example for others to follow, including maintaining silence while on the trail from the parking area to the point where the trail crosses the fire road.
