Storrs Pond Webelos Orientation

1.0 Overview

Each year, Troop 45 offers an outing to help the Webelos Den satisfy the Arrow of Light requirement for participation in an outdoor Boy Scout activity. This year we are hiking to our campsite at Storrs Pond. This activity will be a model Scout outing, employing youth leadership, the patrol method, instruction in basic outing procedures, and lots of fun.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

On Saturday morning, 5 April, we will hike from the Storrs Pond main entrance to the troop camping area at the far end of the pond. We well spend the day there engaging in some fun activities and return in the afternoon. During the hike we will conduct exercises in land navigation and hiking safety. At the campsite we will play some team-buiding games and try some trail cooking. Since the current activity theme is first aid, we may try some accident scenarios.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Saturday 5 April 2003
1000 -- Meet at the main entrance parking lot at Storrs Pond. Troop formation. Introduce leaders. Teach hand signals for Assemble and Circle Up. Divide into patrols.
1020 -- Start hiking. Navigation exercises and lost procedures enroute. Possible first aid drill.
1045 -- Arrive at campsite.
1100 -- Firebuilding contest.
1200 -- Lunch.
1300 -- Capture the Flag.
1315 -- Return.
1400 -- Arrive at Parking Lot. Circle Up. Checkout procedures.

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The weather forecast is for cloudy, windy, cold, and freezing rain. Be prepared! (There is a shelter at the site.) The temperature will probably be right around freezing--classic hypothermia weather. In places where the snow has melted off, it will be quite muddy. Ice on ponds and streams must not be trusted to hold a person's weight!

When it rains, expect cold water to fall out of the sky onto you. Check the weather before departure and Be Prepared.

2.4 Special Requirements

None. This outing is open to all scouts, scouters and parents. The Webelos den has been invited.

There are no skills prerequisites for this outing.

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Adequate clothing for the weather. Think rain, snow, mud, hat, mittens, boots. Playing in the snow will make you wet.
  • Spare dry clothes. Socks, mittens or gloves, and a fleece or sweater at a minimum.
  • Something to carry your stuff in. Your hands must be free.
  • Snacks.

    Class A uniform is required for travel.
