1.0 Overview

In order to develop skills and gain experience for more adventurous winter outings, the troop plans to camp at our site at Storrs Pond in winter conditions. This campout will provide opportunities for developing basic scout skills for Tenderfoot through First Class as well as specialized winter techniques.

In addition to advancement, the outing will include some activities just for fun.

2.0 Concept

2.1 Description

We will meet at the Middle School parking lot on Saturday morning, and from there, hike in to our campsite at the end of Storrs Pond. We will make camp at our site, making improvised and snow shelters as much as practical given the snow conditions. The main activity for the day will be a winter skills event similar to the Klondike Derby. Activities will include tracking, map and compass, and fire building. After dinner we will have a campfire at the leanto. Sunday morning will be a quick pack and go.

2.2 Schedule of Events

Saturday, 28 Jan
1000 - Assemble at the Middle School parking lot. Do not proceed to the campsite!
1015 - Hike in to the campsite.
1045 - Make camp, building snow shelters.
1200 - Flags.
1215 - Lunch.
1300 - Winter skills event.
1630 - Gather firewood and make sure all is ready for the night.
1800 - Dinner.
1900 - Clean up.
2000 - Campfire.
2130 - Bed Prep.
2200 - Lights out.

Sunday, 29 Jan
0800 - Breakfast.
0900 - Break Camp, Police and Pickup.
0930 - Flags.
0935 - Hike out to middle school.
1000 - Arrive at middle school. Do not depart without checking out!

2.3 Expected Conditions and Difficulty

The hike in to camp is easy on wide trails, but be properly equipped and packed for a winter hiking approach.

Check the weather and dress appropriately. Be prepared for the worst weather you can reasonably expect.

The campsite is an established site. Fires are permitted but we will be using this outing as an opportunity to learn to use backpacking stoves in winter conditions.

2.4 Special Requirements

Open to all scouts, scouters, and parents.

There are no skills prerequisites for this outing.

3.3 Costs

$10 per scout for food. Payment due at the troop meeting 25 Jan.

3.4.1 Individual Equipment

  • Overnight gear as described in the Personal Equipment. Pay attention to the Winter Supplement.
  • Spare clothes! It is almost certain that you will get wet.
  • Snow shovel for making shelters.

  • Completed Duty Roster due at troop meeting 25Jan.
