Analysis

The outing came off successfully and more or less as planned. Without Chris Vitale there was some confusion about what we were supposed to do at the opening ceremony, but questions were easily resolved and the boys looked good.

Lessons Learned

  • Arriving at 9:15 is too early. The boys aren't very interested in drilling, so there is quite a bit of standing around in the hot sun. A 9:30 scheduled arrival works, allowing for latecomers and still getting in the rudiments of drill.
  • Once under way, the boys respond to instruction urging them to get in step and stay in position. Nothing fancier is necessary.
  • It would be nice to have a clearer idea of what is expected of us at the end of the parade. Nevertheless, there are rarely any spectators at that point, so there is time to get organized as required.
  • We should plan on getting the flag off the stage right after the North Country Chordsmen sing, and not keep a scout standing on stage during the speech. Scouts can be dismissed at this point.
