Webelos Hike (Velvet Rocks)
0900 - Most people arrived between 0900 and 0915. SPL divided Webelos (3) into the patrols that were represented and reviewed hiking procedures and reminded everyone to stay off of ice-covered water. Issuing and fitting snow shoes took a while but was well worth the time - snow was still deep in spots.
0940 - Departed parking lot and proceeded north along the east side of the pond, through Area 1 and along the trails to the dam and the Troop camp site; arriving about 1030.
SPL organized a game of capture the flag with snowball rules. All the webelos participated and had a good time. Several scouts excavated a fire pit in the snow, built a charcoal fire and prepared an Italian style beef stew in a dutch oven. As the game was winding down and the stew was cooking, we had an opportunity to introduce Jay Buckey to the Webelos and spend some time getting them acquainted while fusing the ends on some pieces of nylon cord and practicing the square knot. Beef stew was declared edible and was consumed completely. Site was cleaned up and everyone packed for the trip out.
1215 - Departed site, continuing around the pond through Area 5 and back to the parking lot.
1259 - Arrived at the parking lot. Briefed the checkout procedure which was followed.
Development of of this outing as "Plan B" showed the agility of the junior leaders. The snowshoes were useful, so it was clear that Velvet Rocks would, indeed, have been a bad idea. The cooking exercise went especially well.

5 # Potatos cut in half inch thick slices.
3 # Carrots cut in half inch thick slices.
1 Large bundle of celery cut in half inch thick slices.
4 Medium onions cut in quarters.
