Flag Retirement Ceremony

Prepared for BSA Troop 45

Muster Day: 31 May 2000

[At this point, the Color Guard is in place in front of the Church, and is ready to lead procession to the cemetary]

[Bugler/MC]: The following is a direct quotation from the beginning of Title 36, Section 176, of the United States Code: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America.

Furthermore, Paragraph (K) of this same Title 36, Section 176, states: The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

[SPL]: (Appropriate command for color guard to start procession)

[Color Guard leads procession to Cemetary]

[Place flags at entrance to Cemetary]

[Two members of color guard join the firetender to help Cubs and Brownies with disposal of small flags from the cemetary]

[Cubs and Brownies replace old flags with new ones. When that’s finished…]

[SPL (to Color Guard)]: Color guard, present the colors!

[Color Guard carries out the old church flag, already folded and primed (with appropriate chemical accelerants) and join the Bugler/MC. They turn and face the crowd with the folded flag in hand, remaining at attention.]

[Bugler/MC]: This flag before you is worn and tattered from use and age. It has flown proudly over the years and done its job well, but now must be replaced with a new flag to properly represent all those who have given so much in the service of our country

[SPL]: Color guard, retire the colors!

[Color Guard carries the flag to the fire]

[Bugler/MC]: May the memory of those who have sacrificed so greatly burn as brightly in our hearts as the flames which consume this flag.

[Color Guard places the folded the flag in the fire]

[SPL]:Scout salute!

[Taps / Echo Taps]

[Rifle Salute]

[SPL]:To! (immediately after rifle shot)

[Color guard retreats from the fire. The member of the color guard holding the new, folded flag presents it to SPL and exchanges a salute..The SPL turns and the rest of the Color Guard falls in behind the SPL. The SPL carries the new flag to the representative of the church, and presents it (without salutes). The SPL and Color Guard then finish their retreat.]

[Rev. Brayman]: Benediction
