Colorado 2002 Expedition

Scouts and Parents of Troop 45,

Each year for the past several years, the troop has undertaken a summer adventure in addition to summer camp. We have gone to Philmont, attended the National Jamboree, and undertaken backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking, and sea kayaking trips from the White Mountain Adventure Base. In the summer of 1998 we mounted an expedition to the Grand Teton National Park. In the summer of 2000 we went to Mount Rainier National Park. Both of these expeditions were open to both scouts and family members. This allowed families to take advantage of the trip as part or all of a family vacation if they wished. Both of these highly successful trips were attended by between 40 and 50 scouts and family members.

We are now beginning the process of planning a trip for the summer of 2002. There will be a meeting for everyone interested in helping us choose a location and plan the 2002 trip on Monday, September 17, at 7:00 PM at the White Church. This will be a "brainstorming" and information-sharing meeting. At the conclusion of the meeting, we hope to have volunteers to conduct additional research on specific destinations to determine whether those destinations are suitable for all those (including scouts, parents, brothers and sisters) who may wish to participate in such a trip. The Patrol Leaders Council will discuss the results of the research on October 1st. We anticipate selecting a destination at that time. Following that selection, we will begin making reservations and detailed plans. We are also looking for a new "Travel Agent" to help with the logistics of the event. In the past this has been done, in an exemplary manner, by Shirley Morris, but since she will likely not be planning future expeditions (Michael will be leaving for college before you know it), Shirley would like to train someone else who can be responsible for future such trips. If you would like to help but cannot attend the meeting, please notify Shirley Morris at 643-2767 or e-mail at:

Yours in Scouting,

Gregg Hoge
